Windsor, Canada power trio Cellos formed in 2010 with the intention of
bringing catharsis to the people with displays of manic destruction via
cranked amps and pummeled drums. Despite its blinding intensity, Cellos’ brand of noisy punk does not forsake the art of songwriting; the feedback blasts and whipcrack drums are a vehicle with which to take you on a white-knuckled ride through peaks and valleys of tension/release.
On their new 3-song 7” on NYC’s Doormat Records, Cellos hoist themselves into the upper echelon of modern noise rock practitioners. “Standard and Poor” opens with a redlining riff that promptly explodes into a series of melodic and rhythmic thrusts echoing fellow Canuck bashers Metz and the late, great McClusky.
Featuring guitarist Kyle Marchand’s intense, corrosive rasp,
“White Suns” crams a Karp-like riff into a mid-tempo banger that gets in
and out with only murder on its mind. “Exodus” slows things down to a
painful lurch, showcasing the wallop this trio packs. After two
well-received 12” EPs, Cellos are set to blaze forth and throw some
unsuspecting folks into their woodchipper.

In a world full of over processed, over effected, and over sampled sounds, be a Kowloon Walled City. More emotion in a single dissonant broken chord than one should ever be able to convey. Chris Huston-BandGeekRecords
